A Study on the changes in the Maturation of the Vaginal Epithelial Cells after Castration in Rabbits


Abstract
Author has investigated the cytohormonal status of rabbit before and after surgical castration. Vaginal epithelial cells were smeared and after H-E staining, the maturation index, maturation value, karyopyknotic index, eosinophilic index, folded cell index, crowded cell index, and leukocytic infiltratioris were evaluated.
The results were as follows:
1. The mean maturation index before operation was 0.8/19.2/80.0 which after castration changed to 5.8/61.4/32.8, 10.2/63.6/26.2 and 17.4/60.4/22.0 on the 4th, 8th, and 12th day of operation, respectively. The mean maturation values of the control, 4th, ith, and 12th day of operation were 89.6, 63.5, 58.0. and 52.9, respectively. The overall atrophy rate was rapid for the first 4 days, and then decreased gradually.
2. Karyopyknotic index of the control, 4th, 8th, and 12th day of operation were 80.0, 32.8, 26.2,
and 22.0 while eosinophilic index were 51.0, 39.8, 24.4, and 20.0, respectively.
3. Folded cell index of the control, 4th, 8th, and 12th day of operation were 3.0, 6.0, 7.2 and
12.8 and those of crowded cell index were 11.4, 39.4, 45.4, and 56.6, respectively.
4. Observation until 12th day after castration failed to show atrophic vaginitis despite continuous changes of dematuration.
